Preserve the Former Tanizaki Residence for Future Generations!
Jun-ichiro Tanizaki, one of the great novelists, born on July 24, 1886, and the creator of many
well-known stories including “The Makioka Sisters”, lived in various residences in the Kansai area.
Two of those residences are preserved: “Ishoh-an” in Kobe and “Senkan-tei” in Kyoto.
Unfortunately, one of the most valuable residences, named “Saran-kaku”, was completely
destroyed by the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995.
We at NPO JUN tried to restore “Saran-kaku” for 14 years from 1995 through 2009, and
succeeded in securing the land and funds to rebuild it. Yet, at the last moment the project could
not be materialized for certain reasons.
The history of this activity was made into a 60-minute documentary drama titled " Withdrawal from
a good Cause" in 2010. Currently, this drama is being uploaded to YouTube divided into six parts
(Japanese language only).
Next year, 2025, will mark 30 years since the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995 and the loss of
Saran-kaku. In this year, 2024, NPO JUN has started another activity to create a 3D CG and VR
model of Saran-kaku and simultaneously publish a booklet of materials to be preserved for future
generations, with the target date of completion on January 17, 2025.
For that purpose, we have launched a fundraising campaign aiming for JPY six million. One of the
channels for the donation is the crowdfunding campaign at CAMPFIRE which starts on July 24,
2024.
Your donations would be highly appreciated. Please select any channel convenient to you,
whether through the crowdfunding, a direct bank remittance, or handing over the cash to the
Directors of JUN.
